There is a clear affinity amongst the members of this quartet for mixing acoustic and electric elements and extending the physical possibilities of their instruments. Montreal-based Sound of the Mountain (Elizabeth Millar, amplified clarinet & Craig Pedersen, amplified trumpet) met Japanese improvising musicians Tetuzi Akiyama (guitar) and Toshimaru Nakamura (no-input mixing board) in Tokyo in August 2017. Several concerts and a recording session at the legendary GOK studio in Kichijoji were the foundation for this collaborative effort in creating sound together, putting focus on the musical possibilities of form and interaction inherent in improvised music. In October 2019 they embark on a Canadian tour for the release of their recording amplified clarinet & trumpet, guitars, nimb on Mystery & Wonder Records.

Tatsuya Nakatani Active internationally since the 1990’s; Nakatani has released over 80 recordings and tours extensively, performing over 150 concerts a year. His primary focus is his solo work and his large ensemble project, the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. With his activity in the new music, improvisation and experimental music scenes, Nakatani has a long history of collaboration. He teaches master classes and lectures at universities and music conservatories around the world. Originally from Osaka, Japan, he makes his home in the small desert town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.

Mark Molnar plays strings and electronics with Horseman, Pass By., Kingdom Shore, 1/4 Tonne Spike Pitcher (Nick Keupfer and Eric Craven), Generator (John Higney and Jamie Gulliksen), Mice (Bennett Bedoukian and Dave Clark), Land of Kush, and in duos and a variety of configurations with Eric Craven, Craig Pedersen, James Annett, David Broscoe, Jamie Gulliksen, Linsey Wellman, and Bennett Bedoukian. He also plays erhu and rebab in Gamelan Semara Winangun.

His music has been performed by the Quasar Saxaphone Quartet (Montreal), and the Thin Edge Music Collective (Toronto), and he has written and performed string arrangements for Buried Inside, If Then Do, and Alaskan.

He is the co-founder, along with Nathan Medema and Ross Birdwise, of Pleasure Through Sound, and the Fat-Controller/Minister of Ambient Replenishment at Black Bough Records.

He has performed the music of Helmut Lachenmann, John Cage, James Tenney, Arvo Part, Giya Kanchelli, Brian Ferneyhough, Wolf Edwards, and Galina Ustvolskaya.
