Anna Webber is a New York-based flautist, saxophonist, and composer whose interests and work live the overlap between avant-garde jazz and new classical music. She has released several albums as a leader, including 2019’s critically acclaimed Clockwise (Pi Recordings), featuring a septet comprised of several of the most creative musicians working in New York’s avant-garde, and two albums (Binary and Simple) with the Simple Trio, which features John Hollenbeck and Matt Mitchell.
Erik Hove is an alto saxophonist who plays a wide variety of jazz, improvised, and contemporary music. Born in Vancouver, he has lived in Montreal and New York, attending McGill University as well as studying with alto master Greg Osby. While in New York, he formed the turntable-jazz group Soundclash, which won the Montreal OFF festival’s Francois Marcaurelle prize and released a disc with Effendi records. He also heads various trios and quartets. He recently returned to McGill to study composition, and while there formed his latest project, the Erik Hove Chamber Ensemble. He plays with many local and international artists, including the Juno-winning Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra and Anna Webber’s Montreal People.
James Annett is an improvising violist currently based in Montreal. His music explores the intersections between diverse styles of music such as jazz, avant-garde, rock, folk and traditional music in an improvisational setting. He has performed alongside Ellwood Epps, Eric Chenaux and Rainer Wiens, as well as in myriad ad hoc co-operative bands. He performs regularly at improvised music events and festivals in Montreal, Ottawa and New York, including the Mardi Spaghetti and IMOO concert series. Recent activities include workshops at the Banff Centre and at SIM New York, where he studied privately with the violists Mat Maneri and Eyvind Kang. He has also studied privately with violinist Josh Zubot.
John Hollenbeck focuses extensively on composing for and leading the critically acclaimed Claudia Quintet and his three-time GRAMMY-Nominated Large Ensemble. The recipient of a B.M. in Percussion and a M.M. in Jazz Composition from the Eastman School of Music, Hollenbeck has since received numerous awards and commissions, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the ASCAP Jazz Vanguard Award and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award.
