Pierre-Yves Martel, Ben Grossman and Patrick Graham offer a program inspired by their rich experience in the practices of contemporary and ancient music. Their sense of innovation leads to the emergence of new approaches to improvisation, which they explore with precision, curiosity and humour to bring out new musical universes.
Pierre-Yves Martel is a musician with a singular career that continues to renew his identity and his practice. If he is an instrumentalist, he defines himself above all as a sound artist whose work oscillates between research and experimentation. Thus he revisits the use of the viola da gamba in new spaces and gives this instrument an opening on the world today. Creator of an authentic mixed language of unconventional techniques and instrumental preparations, he also works on the margins of the instrument, which he abandons to make way for various objects from which a sound potential emerges.
Ben Grossman is a very active musician: improviser, studio musician, composer, sound artist and curator. Specialist of hurdy-gurdy, he collaborates on many projects, ranging from early medieval music to experimental electronic music. He has collaborated on numerous studio recordings, soundtracks for film and television, sound designs for theatre, sound installations and works designed for radio transmission.
A “master improviser of percussion” that stands “… on the border of several traditional and creative music …” is how journalist Yves Bernard (Le Devoir) qualifies the multi-percussionist Patrick Graham. His playing combines a wide range of influences: from Japanese percussion, to Mediterranean tambourines, Indian and Irish rhythms, while maintaining a constant fascination for new and invented sounds. He is active as a trainer and has directed many workshops in Canada, the United States, Japan and China. In 2009, Patrick released his first solo album, Rheō.
