Tamayugé

Performing at Gigspace, Saturday November 5th 7:00pm

  • Maya Kuroki – Voice
  • Tamara Filyavich – Electronics

Maya Kuroki and Tamara Filyavich are two Montreal-based musicians from Japan and Ukraine, respectively, who met at a Super Music Workshop performance in the Spring of 2017. Soon after they started performing as the duo Tamayugé in a musical collaboration which mixes electronics, vocal improvisations and performance art. Their music blends suspense with melancholia and kitschy tones with avant-garde electronic perspectives. The end result aims to tell a story, perform a ritual and hopefully connect with the audience on a very intimate and intuitive level. Maya Kuroki’s phantasmagoric vocals and dreamy guitar added to Tamara Filyavich’s team of electronic ghosts fresh out of her nightmares invite us to a strange ritual, between tormented performance and feminist ceremony. Like Baba Yaga, an ambivalent character of the Slav mythology, both part of Japanese and Ukrainian cultures, Tamayugé’s music brings scary and exciting shivers and open to an enigmatic imaginary. The mysterious and unsettling Tamayuge universe is somewhere between Phew, Laurie Anderson and The Residents.

The duo has preformed in Montreal several times in recent years and as part of Tone Deaf Festival in Kingston, Ontario in November of 2018, at the Suoni il Popolo Festival in 2018, and at FIMAV in 2021. Their debut LP “Baba Yaga” was released by France’s Akuphone Records in March 2019 and is available in digital form on Bandcamp.
