Performing at Glebe-St. James United Church, Sunday June 9th 8:15pm
Formed nearly 20 years ago by former Bill Dixon associates Eric Zinman (piano), Glynis Lomon (cello and waterphone), and Syd Smart (drums and percussion), New Language Collaborative are one of the Boston area’s longest-standing improvising music ensembles. NLC released their first album in 2007 on the Ayler Records label, with saxophonist Mario Rechtern. A follow-up album featuring Ted Daniel on trumpet was released in 2013, and since 2018 the band has been working with long-time friend of IMOO Ellwood Epps on trumpet. Percussionist Matt Crane (who was previously here with Epps at our 2022 Spring Fling) has inherited the drummer’s stool in recent years, since Smart’s 2020 re-location from Boston to New York. Spanning several generations and covering a truly orchestral range of sounds and dynamics, the players are as strong and idiosyncratic as they are flexible and deeply in tune with each other and the music.
